Stone Pine
Pinus pinea
About this plant
The umbrella pine of the Lebanese coast, grown for the broad flat canopy that makes it one of the best shade trees for parks and large gardens. Needs room - this is a tree for open space, not a courtyard.
Planting & care
Full sun, deep free-draining soil. Slow for the first years, then fast. Keep clear of paving and drains; the surface roots lift both. Little pruning beyond lifting the crown as it matures.
